Three out of four ain't bad, and neither is Soldiers of Love, the sixth album from The Derailers. It's good for what it is, but don't expect anything earth-shattering about any of the 14 tracks. It follows a stereotypical country music formula plenty of guitar, a little twang, and a whole lot of references to booze and broads. These boot-scootin' boys from Texas have a practiced sound, and they aren't afraid to borrow a little from past talents to pay the bills. They call their style "Beatles-by-way-of Bakersfield," and used Buzz Cason's "Soldier of Love" as the title track (covered by none other than the Beatles for a BBC performance) just to prove it. They also do their very best Johnny Cash impersonation on "An American Man." It's supposed to be a tribute to the Man in Black, but it's more of an imitation albeit a good imitation. But the country crème de la crème for this CD is the first song, "Cold Beer, Hot Women and Cool Country Music." It just screams line dance. Want to sample the wares?
