White Rabbits at Crescent Ballroom, 3/30/12

White Rabbits

Crescent Ballroom

It's safe to say it's been a while since I've been so blown away by a band I didn't even know.

Everyone I spoke to before the White Rabbits show started hadn't even heard of the band except for one or two people, so considering my sample audience, White Rabbits definitely gained quite a few new fans last night.

The crowd was taken by the contagious beat of "Back For More" and the jungle drums of "Percussion Gun," which was the most popular part of the band's performance. Everyone got into the music rather quickly and there was a ton of head nodding action going on all night long.

To the delight of the crowd, the band played a generous amount of songs from their third album, Milk Famous, which came out earlier this month.

The entire performance was better than it seemed as though many in attendance had anticipated. Partly due to frontman Stephen Patterson's epic enunciation, the band's sound was clean and flawless. The band's level of enthusiasm on stage was immeasurable. The whole group was fun to watch, but especially tambourine player and drummer Matt Clark, who verified that there has never been a more enthusiastic and likable tambourine player in the world. Big ups to that dude for making me, and probably a few others, want his job. He looked like he had a great time on stage, and people couldn't take their eyes off of him.

And frankly, whenever a show is surprisingly awesome and the crowd really takes notice, the band is bound to have some repeat customers. So next time White Rabbits comes to town, it's probably safe to say they'll be performing in a bigger venue. White Rabbits proved last night that they are certainly a band to keep an eye on and tell some friends about.

Critic's notebook:

Last night: White Rabbits at Crescent Ballroom.

Personal bias: None. I had never heard of this band till earlier this month.

The crowd: Hipsters wearing plaid shirts and V-necks between the ages of 21 and 35...pretty par for the Crescent.

Random notebook dump: Some bits of confetti kept falling from the ceiling, and I'm guessing they were remnants from a show a few nights ago. Obviously it just fell, but I'd like to think that White Rabbits literally rocked it out of the ceiling.
