The Arizona Wildcats will take the floor in a few hours against the Memphis Tigers in first-round NCAA action.
The 5th-seeded Cats are favored over a young Tigers team coached by former Arizona player and assistant coach Josh Pastner, a bright, precocious (two college degrees in three years) guy who is one of the youngest head coaches in major-college ball.
We have enjoyed this year’s Arizona squad, especially the magnificent Derrick Williams, a certain high first-round pick if, as expected, he leaves for the NBA after this season ends (hopefully not today).
But, favored though they are, the Cats have been inconsistent, looking fabulous at times against tough competition (Kansas, for one) and very ordinary at other times (as in the lost weekend out in Los Angeles against USC and UCLA).
The game will air on CBS, Channel 5, with one of our favorites, former Arizona star and Phoenix Suns general manager Steve Kerr doing the color commentary.
Sounds like a much cushier gig for Steve than trying to keep the fading Suns’ collective heads above water in what is turning into a funky finish to a long season.
