Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is entering a diversion program that would result in charges being dismissed if she successfully completes the program.

Griner was arrested just last week along with fiancée and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson after a physical fight at the couple’s house in Goodyear.

A Goodyear police spokeswoman said that officers “found the two had been in a physical fight with one another resulting in minor injuries to both.”

She said in a statement issued through her attorney that, “It is never OK for an argument to turn physical. This will never happen again, and I take my relationship and my responsibility as a role model seriously.”

Griner’s diversion program includes 26 weeks of domestic-violence counseling.

Griner was the first overall pick of the 2013 WNBA draft, and was an All-Star selection in each of her first two seasons.

Of course, Griner isn’t the only Phoenix athlete to be arrested recently on domestic-violence charges — Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington and former Cards linebacker Jonathan Dwyer both were arrested, too.

However, Washington and Dwyer both landed on probation after their arrests on felony domestic-violence charges, instead of just the misdemeanor charge Griner faced.
