Tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of China’s one-kid policy and pro-lifers were out in force today in Washington D.C., bashing the Communist nation for it’s less-than-human-rights-friendly means of enforcing the law.
China has about 1.3 billion people. To slow the rapid population growth, in 1980, the government implemented the policy allowing couples to have one child (couples in rural areas are allowed two). If you surpass your allotted number of pregnancies, the Chinese government has used some (ahem) creative ways to make sure it won’t happen again.
Some of those methods include throwing offenders in jail, forcing them into labor camps, forced sterilizations, and forced abortions.Arizona
Congressman Trent Franks — and the rest of the pro-life crowd —
doesn’t like it. And he doesn’t like the way President Barack Obama
is handling the situation.
Franks,
and other pro-life members of Congress, held a press conference today,
where they bashed the president for failing to act on China’s policy.

“As
tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of China’s brutal, oppressive,
inhumane ‘one-child’ policy, one would hope that President Obama would
have taken advantage of his face-to-face meeting yesterday with Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao to express absolute opposition to a policy that
results in millions of coerced abortions ever year,” he said.“For
someone who says he cares about ‘women’s rights,’ as President Obama
so often claims when promoting abortion-on-demand, Mr. Obama seems
disturbingly unperturbed by” the one child policy, Franks added.Franks
went further and accused the Obama administration of putting economic
issues ahead of human rights concerns. He
said: “Moreover, it would seem that ignoring China’s overwhelming
record of human rights violations is an administration-wide policy.
Just last February, while addressing China’s appalling human rights
record during a trip to China, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
shockingly said, ‘… our pressing on those issues can’t interfere
with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis,
and the security crisis.’ I can hardly sum up the Administration’s
deplorably skewed priorities better than Mrs. Clinton herself.”
American
presidents have been ignoring “China’s overwhelming record of human
rights violations” for years — why would Franks think Obama was going
to “change” anything? Oh, that’s right…
