Dimpled Candidate
The 2000 election is barely history, yet the horses are already lining up for the next race — in 2002. The latest filly to float her name for public office is Jordan Rich Rose, who confirms that she is “considering” a GOP bid for Arizona Secretary of State.
That could potentially put Rose up against Democrat Chris Cummiskey — the formidable state senator who’s created so many government commissions you may think he already is secretary of state.
Cummiskey has loads of experience next to political neophyte Rose, but she may have one up on him: a campaign consultant in the house, husband Jason Rose.
Dennis Match
Dennis Burke may not strike you as a common name — it’s no John Smith or Jane Doe — but it’s common enough to belong to two players on the Phoenix political scene.
There’s Dennis Burke the Activist — former director of Arizona Common Cause, now director of Arizona Good Government Association.
And there’s Dennis Burke the Lawyer — former counsel to a U.S. senator, a U.S. attorney and even a U.S. president. He’s currently an aide to Arizona Attorney General Janet Napolitano.
The Flash thinks these guys should start using their middle initials.
When New Times recently reported that Dennis Burke the Activist had lost his Common Cause title and started a new group, Dennis Burke the Lawyer’s phone rang off the hook. And not everyone was quickly mollified by word of the mix-up. Dennis Burke the Lawyer spent a full five minutes on the phone with a high school friend, trying to explain that he’d never worked for Common Cause.
It may be Dennis Burke the Activist’s turn next.
Dennis Burke the Lawyer will likely have a much higher profile in coming months. When first assistant AG Tim Delaney resigned his position recently, Napolitano named Burke to fill the number one staff slot in her office.
