This weekend, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio celebrated the 20th birthday of his favorite son jail, Tent City.
To celeberate, Arpaio ordered some stuff for inmates that’s generally not allowed — coffee, better food, rental movies, unrestricted television, magazines, ’90s music, and cigarettes (candy cigarettes, HARDY HAR HAR!).

We had a hard time thinking of what’s worth celebrating about the jail.
Statistically, most people don’t die in Tent City or Arpaio’s other jails, so that’s kind of a plus.
Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
Um, that’s about it.
It’s kind of frowned upon to claim you’re running a concentration camp, and it’s probably more frowned upon to celebrate its birthday.
Can you think of anything about Tent City that’s worth celebrating?
