A Mexican national was busted trying to smuggle more than $100,000 from the United States into Mexico, and he may have been caught only because he either lied or is bad at counting.

See, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says 54-year-old Gamaliel Gonzales De Dios declared $1,000 in cash when he tried to go back into Mexico on Friday, but CBP officers counted it up, and found $1,893.

Now even more suspicious of Gonzales De Dios — who was trying to go through the Dennis DeConcini Port in Nogales — officers took a look at the cooler he was carrying across, along with his $893 in undeclared cash.

$30,000

Boom — officers found out that the man had a custom cooler, made to hold more than $100,000 in U.S. currency that he wasn’t going to tell anyone about, according to CBP.

The cash was seized, and the resident of Nayarit, Mexico, was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

At the time of this post, there was no federal complaint filed against the man.
