Senator John McCain on Saturday blamed wildfires currently raging in Arizona on illegal immigrants — without offering any proof to support his claim.

“There is substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally,” McCain said at a press conference. “They have set fires because they want to signal others. They have set fires to keep warm. And they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents and agencies from them. So the answer to that part of the problem is get a secure border.”

Again, McCain offered absolutely no evidence that illegal immigrants had anything to do with the fires. See our story on the matter here.

McCain’s comments may havae been idiotic, presumptive, and based on no actual proof, but were they racist?
