Window-cleaning news blogger Pete Kosednar recently had his records request fulfilled for the video of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon running a red light in August, which we pass along to you for the educational value.
Until Gordon’s ticket, we had no idea that red-light cameras could catch you simply for failing to come to a complete stop before you make a legal right-hand turn on a red light. But we did know it was illegal and, in heavy traffic, potentially hazardous. (A fact the contrite mayor has admitted).
The video shows exactly what motorists should not do when making that kind of turn, whether at a camera-equipped or standard intersection.
Scott Phelps, Gordon’s spokesman, confirmed for New Times that the little white pickup in the video (screen grab at right) was, in fact, the mayor’s.
Gordon recently spent five hours at a Chandler defensive driving school for the violation, where he went unrecognized as just another scofflaw.
