Police are searching for a man who shot three people, including two children, at a Phoenix apartment complex Tuesday night.

A 41-year-old man was walking his dog at the complex, near 32nd Street and Thomas Road, around 10 p.m. Tuesday when a man on a second-story balcony vomited on the dog, Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes says.

The two started arguing, and the man who vomited on the dog started to come down the stairs. The man who was walking with his dog retreated to his apartment, but the other man started shooting at the victim just as he reached his door.

As the victim was shot, he fell into his apartment, and the shooter kept firing, striking two children -- a 14-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy.

The children were hospitalized, but their injuries aren't life-threatening, Holmes says. The 41-year-old man, however, underwent surgery and is in critical condition this morning.

Three other people inside the apartment were not injured.

The shooter was able to run away from the apartment complex to avoid police.

Officer Holmes tells New Times that police know the identity of the 22-year-old shooter but won't name him as they search for him. He doesn't live at the apartment complex but was visiting, Holmes says.

UPDATE July 11: They got him.
