Phoenix New Times

Phoenix New Times is hiring a news reporter to join our scrappy editorial team. For someone eager to break news, write with voice and authority, and make a deep impression on the Valley, it’s a fantastic opportunity.
Since 1970, New Times has been a proving ground for some of the most ambitious, indelible journalists in the state. At this newspaper — and yes, we still print weekly — you’ll get to challenge local power structures, tell intimate stories about real people, and embark on the sorts of old-school reporting adventures that launch careers.
We’re looking for a versatile news reporter to tell timely and engaging stories about this sui generis megalopolis. Can you knuckle down to cover breaking news and trending topics at top speed? Do you have the organization and vision to tackle enterprise stories and investigative features? Read on.
While we encourage you to bring your whole self to work, this position is ultimately for a journalist who will write news articles — not opinion or advocacy pieces.
Key responsibilities of the job
- Pitch, report and write a variety of stories for our news section, producing an average of more than five written articles per week.
- Attend public meetings, town halls, political rallies, court hearings and other events to find people who make important decisions and those who live with the consequences. The job sometimes requires evening and weekend work.
- Build broad and diverse relationships so that your sources, story ideas, research and reporting reflect the diverse communities of the Valley.
- Use social media to find trending topics, discover sources and promote your work.
- Dedicate yourself to accuracy and professionalism.
- Contribute to our annual Best of Phoenix issue and other projects.
Who you are
- A naturally curious reporter with a record of crafting crisp prose on deadline.
- A diligent writer and critical thinker who values constructive feedback on your work.
- An experienced reporter across at least some of our areas of focus: politics, government, public health, criminal justice, cannabis, labor, education and the environment.
- A cheerful communicator who collaborates fluently with colleagues.
- A highly organized, resourceful and nosy self-starter who reads widely and gets excited to make open records requests.
- Bilingual, we hope. And funny.
Benefits
- Compensation range of $48,000 to $50,000, depending on experience.
- 401(k) with company match.
- Medical, dental, vision and life insurance.
- 10 paid holidays, 14 days of paid time off, five paid sick days per year.
- Hybrid work policy based in our downtown Phoenix office.
- This is a union position.
