Along with mojitos and mai tais, sangria is a quintessential "umbrella" drink, perfect for poolside sipping. Traditionally made with wine, fruit juice, brandy, and heaps of chopped fruit, this Iberian classic is proof that sometimes wine can undo its top button and party down a bit.

Here are our five picks for great sangria in metro Phoenix.

Ingo's Tasty Food — Sangria Blanco

Ingo's Tasty Food in Arcadia looks like somewhere you'd pop into after a day on the beach. It's breezy, airy, and full of sunshine — don't worry, it has misters — which is probably why its Sangria Blanco ($7, $4 during happy hour) tastes so refreshing. Made with pinot grigio, fresh apple, and lemon, it's one of our favorite white sangrias available in the Valley. Drink it with an order of Ingo's Avocado Toast ($7.50), made with baby tomatoes, burrata, and extra virgin olive oil.
The Parlor — House Made Sangria

Already known for its great cocktails, The Parlor keeps its drink quality consistent with its House Made Sangria ($10). The red sangria is made with dry Spanish wine, brandy, gin, crème de cassis, and fresh fruit juice, making it more cocktail-esque than some purely wine-and-brandy-based versions. You also can order a White Sangria, made with white wine, rum, Triple Sec, and blood orange liqueur.
O.H.S.O. Eatery and nanoBrewery — White Sangria

O.H.S.O. may be known for its brews and bar food, but sometimes we like to deviate a little and order the white sangria ($7 per glass, $18 for a pitcher). We like its sweeter-than-average strawberry flavors — and sometimes it's just fun to drink something on ice out of a wine glass. You can order O.H.S.O.'s sangria in either white or red for only $6 during happy hour.
Phoenix Public Market Cafe — Sangria

Every now and then, a drink comes along to prove that sometimes you don't need to mess with an original recipe. Phoenix Public Market's sangria ($8, $5 during Happy Hour) is just that drink. Made with brandy, red wine, orange juice, and fresh fruit, this sangria strikes just the right balance between sweet fruit and ruddy wine flavors. Enjoy it at the bar with an order of ceviche tostadas, also $5 during happy hour.
Switch Restaurant & Wine Bar — Blond Sangria

Switch's not-too-sweet Blond Sangria ($6.50) is made with a blend of white wine, fresh fruit, and the restaurant's own secret sangria mix. While you can also order it as a red sangria, it's a great, simple drink to enjoy while whiling away the afternoon along the Central Corridor. Better yet, you can order it for only $4 on Wednesday every week.
