Doughnuts are kind of a big deal these days.
And if you don't already believe us, consider the growing number of local shops serving deep-fried dough including, of course, Welcome Chicken + Donuts, Rollover Doughnuts, and soon, Born & Glazed.
This latest name to enter the Phoenix doughnut game comes from Nicholas Campisano and Joshua James, who's names you might recognize as half of the four-man team behind The Clever Koi in Phoenix. And though Born & Glazed isn't associated with the modern Asian restaurant, but you can bet that Campisano and James are bringing the same sleek aesthetic and cool creativity to the new project.
The doughnut and coffee shop, which will open on Monday, is located at 3213 N. Hayden Road in the same Scottsdale strip mall that houses the Asian market House of Rice. James says the tentative hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
For baking duties, the restaurateurs have tapped Adrian Romero and a third partner, Jarrod Stamper, will manage day to day operations.
"We're going to start simple," James says. The shop will offer a menu of 10 "classics" and between four and five seasonal flavors that will rotate weekly.
But "classic" flavors at Born & Glazed won't be your mom's doughnuts. Instead Romero's ready to offer creations such as a strawberry-filled doughnut with cream cheese frosting and graham cracker crumble, a salted pickly pear glazed doughnut (that will come in the shape of a cactus), and a strawberry glazed doughnut sprinkled with Nerds candies.
James says classic doughnuts will cost $1.75 each, while seasonal creations will cost $2.25. You'll also be able to get a half dozen doughnuts for $9 or a dozen for $17.
Born & Glazed will also offer coffee (they're using Tempe-based Espresso Italia) and pastries including cinnamon rolls and muffins.
As far the local (and growing) doughnut scene is concerned, James says they're aiming to fall in between the high-volume, wildly-imaginative doughnut making going down at Welcome Chicken + Donuts and the more straightforward, classic offerings you'll find at well-loved local spots such as Rainbow Doughnuts and Bosa Doughnuts.
Eventually, the duo hopes to open additional Born & Glazed locations around the Valley — though it might be a while until that happens since The Clever Koi team (which includes Campisano, James, and chef partners Jared Porter and Joseph Absolor) is also working on a two-part food and beverage project located at The Colony on 7th Street in midtown Phoenix.
