Huss Brewing Co., one of the state’s largest craft brewers, has closed two of its four locations. The Tempe brewer announced on Jan. 31 it has shuttered a taproom in uptown Phoenix along with Papago Brewing Co. in Mesa.

The company got its start in Tempe and was launched by owners Jeff and Leah Huss in 2013. Huss Brewing Co. makes beers recognizable around the Valley such as Scottsdale Blonde. Over time, Huss added more spots to sip its true-to-style brews. In 2017, Huss opened a pub with food and a breezy patio at Uptown Plaza, followed by a downtown restaurant and bar in 2022.

In addition to crafting its own beers, Huss has preserved other local brands. The now-closed Mesa taproom was named for Papago Brewing Co. The couple bought the brand and continue to brew its popular sips such as Papago Orange Blossom mandarin wheat and Coconut Joe milk stout. The Papago taproom opened in Mesa in 2023

The former Huss and Papago pubs are poised to remain craft beer bars. In the same post from Jan. 31, Huss shared that Dynamite Beer Co. will take over the Uptown Plaza location, while Copper State Taphouse will open in Mesa.

Dynamite Beer Co. is a Cave Creek-based taproom and bottle shop. It is expected to open at Camelback Road and Central Avenue later this month. Copper State Taphouse is likewise anticipated to arrive in February, located in Mesa near Dobson Road and State Route 202.

The closures come as the brewery renews its focus on production, Leah Huss shared via email. The brewer recently inked a deal with Arizona State University to become Sun Devils Athletics' official craft beer, debuting Devil’s Halo Amber Ale and announcing plans to open a taproom within the university's football stadium this fall.

Huss’ downtown and Tempe taprooms remain open.

“We will still be happy to see your faces at our Downtown Phoenix and Tempe Taproom locations and look forward to continually leaning into what we do best," the post read, "brewing great Arizona beer!”
