Starting this Saturday, Local First Arizona’s Independents Week will take place all over Arizona. The annual celebration of local businesses runs from June 25 through July 4 and will feature events in Phoenix and Tucson, as well as the return of the Golden Coupon.
The Golden Coupon can be printed or downloaded on smartphones and grants the holder a week of 20 percent discounts at hundreds of locally owned restaurants including House of Tricks, Beckett’s Table, Craft 64, and ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho. Anyone who uses the Golden Coupon will have to ask participating businesses about specific restrictions, but you can view a full list of participating restaurants on the Local First Arizona website.
In preparation for the week of celebration, Arizonans can also take the “Buy Local” pledge, which will enter them into a raffle for a grand-prize Prescott staycation package that includes a one night stay at the Hassayampa Inn.
There are two main events during Independents Week in Phoenix:
The Food Crawl at the Food Hall kicks off the week on Saturday, June 25, at DeSoto Central Market (915 North Central Avenue) from 5 to 9 p.m. The event is free to attend, but attendees are responsible for the food and drinks. Participating restaurants and their specials include:
DeSoto Burger Bar, PB&J sliders
Walrus & The Pearl, Blue Point oysters
Adobo Dragon, Oaxaca rice croquette with roasted corn sambal
Radish, mini tostada salad
Tea and Toast, eight-ounce specialty tea
DeSoto Bar, DeSoto Smash or Motor Mule sample cocktail
The larder + the delta, pig ears
The specials range from $2 to $5, and guests who complete a tasting of all the DeSoto restaurant concepts will receive free tickets to a local show or other prizes throughout the night. Early registration for this event is available online.
The Independents Week Pub Crawl will take place on Sunday, July 3, and will go through multiple bars and restaurants in downtown Phoenix. The crawl begins at DeSoto Central Market at 6 p.m., and will stop at other drinking spots including Cafe at Phoenix Public Market, FilmBar, Carly’s Bistro, and The Nash. This event is also free to attend, but attendees are responsible for their own food and beverages (each stop will feature a $4 drink special exclusively for the Pub Crawl attendees).
