Now Open: Nanny's Brings Wings, Fish and Chips to Downtown Phoenix

The Southern-influenced restaurant was formerly a Laveen food truck.

A popular Laveen food truck run by a husband and wife team now has a permanent parking space at 830 East Washington Street.

Nanny's opened early last month. The bright yellow building that was once First Choice Bail Bonds now serves breaded chicken wings, fish and chips, shrimp baskets, and salads from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Nanny's is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

"Nanny is my mother," says owner and chef Andrea Nabors, who started the Southern-influenced food truck a couple of years ago with her husband, Josh. "These are the recipes I saw her cook when I was a child, and that I learned to cook growing up."

Currently, Nanny's is offering dine-in and carryout with online ordering. Featured menu items include five deep-fried wings and fries for $14, a shrimp basket for $14, a crispy fried fish filet with fries for $14, 10 wings and fries for $17, or 20 wings and fries for $32. A personal-sized deep-fried caramel apple pie is available for dessert. Fruit punch and lemonade are offered to drink.

"The wings really are our go-to. It's what we first started with," Josh says. "Our wings are breaded, so that sets us apart from just about any other wings."

Customers can get their wings smothered in a variety of homemade sauces that Nabors and her mother perfected about 10 years ago. Popular sauces include teriyaki, sweet chili, honey barbecue, garlic parmesan, mango habanero, and lemon pepper.

"We're trying to cater to the customer that just wants to come in and grab something quick," Josh says. "It's not a full-on soul food menu, but just a couple few things that we can do really good and kind of fast."

Josh left his full-time job in March 2020 to concentrate on growing the food truck. According to Andrea, Josh "does everything else so I can cook."

"After a couple of years of doing the truck, we kind of knew that we wanted to take the next step up," Andrea says. "We would have a lot of customers coming, and we would set up seating outside of our truck. So at that point, we were kind of like, 'We need a dining room.'"

The couple said they decided on the downtown location because it offered a corner lot with plenty of parking that was near businesses and a residential area.

"It's been a really cool community atmosphere around here," Josh says.

As the weather cools this fall, the couple is planning on setting up additional dining spaces in the parking lot behind the restaurant for a more food truck-style meal service that may include live jazz music.

"We just want to create a calm, relaxing environment back there," Josh says.
