Pinterest can really be like a fairy tale sometimes. Only the most beautiful things abound, it's all staged, and it makes you long for a different life. But everyone knows fairy tales are full of witches and trickery...
This edible glitter recipe is a fairy tale. It appears like you will have an infinite supply of sparkly cupcake decorations, but I found is that what you'll really be left with is something that looks more like craft sand. As in, colored sand. It's like a fake diamond.
To be fair, the original recipe - from PlanetPals, does not hype this as an "edible glitter" recipe. What they provide is a recipe for "Non Toxic Glitter." And while the instructions in some of the "edible glitter" pins on Pinterest call for sugar, the real recipe calls for salt. I'll bet that makes all the sparkly difference in the world. I almost tried it, but could see no use for a bunch of colored salt. Even if it works beautifully, who wants a bunch of salty glitter on their cupcake?
Pinterest is like a game of "telephone." It starts off one way until some jerk totally screws it up... But at least millions of us can have a beautiful pin of sparkly edible glitter on our Pinterest boards, right?!?! I think I'm gonna repin it as "Edible Colored Sand."
To make non toxic glitter you will need: 1/4 cup of salt - or sugar! 1 teaspoon of liquid food coloring aluminum foil baking pan
Preheat oven to 350. Mix the sugar and food coloring until well combined and spread it on a foil-lined baking pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool before using.
Planet Pals says, "this glitter can be used for almost any type of project and may even be mixed with glue for special crafts." YUMMY!
