While listening to the opening moment of Isis’ latest album, Wavering Radiant, you may think that you accidentally popped in a disc by art rockers Gastr del Sol or even something more far out, like Greek avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis.
This is exactly why we heart the Los Angeles-based progressive-metal band, which continues to help forward the post-metal genre by mixing and matching grindcore with atmospheric metal and non-traditional rock elements. On the aforementioned tune, “Hall of the Dead,” an esoteric noise/feedback intro jumpstarts the band’s fifth full-length album before opening up to pure metal bliss.
