You’re a classical composer living in Norway. That means you must exclusively like Edvard Grieg or something that sonically references a journey at sea. Well, in the case of Ola Gjeilo, that’s not exactly accurate. The Norwegian-born creative type, who now lives in Manhattan, loves him some jazz, especially cats like Keith Jarrett. When Gjeilo isn’t writing gorgeous compositions for world-recognized ensembles such as the Phoenix Chorale, he’s swinging hard and vamping deep on the keys.
Gjeilo will team up with local reed player Ted Belledin for a live performance. Together, the two accomplished musicians will play improvised numbers that may teeter on the territory of all of those classic ECM trio sessions that Jarrett has done over the years.
