We enjoy laughing at the misfortunes of others so much that there’s even a word for it: Schadenfreude.

It’s that concept that makes Mel Brooks’ movie-turned-musical The Producers so damned funny. The play tells the story of manqué Broadway producer Max Bialystock and timid accountant Leo Bloom, who unite to fleece investors by producing a theatrical fiasco but instead fail their way into a runaway hit.

This year’s extended January staging of the Broadway hit at Fountain Hills Community Theater was so popular that audiences demanded a remount. Peter J. Hill returns to direct the original leads, including fan-favorites Scott Hyder and Michael Stewart.

Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: June 17. Continues through July 3, 2011
