Every actor knows that a review can make or break a career, regardless of how accurate the critics are.
“True or false, that which is said of men often occupies as important a place in their… destinies, as that which they do,” Victor Hugo wrote in his acclaimed novel Les Misérables. The same could be said of the Boublil and Schönberg musical it inspired, which The New York Times described as a “spectacular production, from start to finish.” The show went on to earn multiple Tony Awards and become the longest-running musical in the world.
Award-winning directors Laurence Connor and James Powell, both of whom acted in Les Miz earlier in their careers, helm Cameron Mackintosh’s 25th anniversary production of the musical about an orphaned child, an unlikely love triangle and a poor man jailed for stealing a loaf of bread. The period costumes of designer Andreane Neofitou dazzle the eye, as do Matt Kinley’s sets, which are based in part on Victor Hugo’s paintings.
