Although Independence Day may be around the corner, it seems like it’s never too early to start celebrating the birth of our nation, or blowing crap up for that matter.

The folks at Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Department apparently share this opinion, as they’ll be setting off colorful and cacophonous explosions in the sky during the annual Firecracker Softball Tournament this weekend. The annual three-day event, which takes place at Rose Mofford Softball Complex and offers a massive fireworks display during the evening, will feature more than two dozen teams competing in single- and double-elimination softball tournaments. Games will be played at breakneck speed (or whatever the softball equivalent of breakneck speed is), because each batter will be given only two strikes.
The competition commences at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at 9833 North 25th Avenue.
