The raw energy of the gypsy punk musical circus that is Gogol Bordello can’t be beat in a live context. However, if you missed the New York band’s show at the Marquee on October 20, you can dry your tears by catching Gogol Bordello Non-Stop.
Helmed by filmmaker Margarita Jimeno, the documentary traces the journey of the Eugene Hütz-led band. Jimeno pieces together the story from interviews and extensive concert footage, attempting to capture the band’s frenetic electricity.
During the years 2001 to 2006, when the film was shot, Gogol Bordello toured extensively, ascending from wily underground underdogs to music-festival darlings. Much of the group’s success is owed to its unique style, in which old-world music meets old-school-rock-star performance ethic, especially from Hütz. The immigrant, born in Ukraine, envisioned the band as a vehicle “dedicated to creating an insane party atmosphere to deliver messages of social and political commentary.”
