Here in the States, the closest thing to a “traditional garment” worn by men, women, and children is a pair of jeans (at best). In Japan, however, the kimono has been a major wardrobe staple of each and every citizen for centuries. As familiar as the kimono is internationally, many people don’t realize that it actually comes in a vast array of styles, fabrics, patterns, and colors to fit any occasion, from casual day wear to wedding attire.
Learn about the garment’s history when members of Japanese Culture Club of Arizona host “Kimono Evolution: The Japanese Character of Silk,” a lecture on the development of the kimono over the last 150 years. You can also peep actual wedding and ceremonial kimonos from the mid to late-19th century that were previously unavailable for public viewing.
