The state of gay marriage may officially be in shambles according to the California Supreme Court, but the comedy community has long been upholding equal rights for all. Take the official bio of Suzanne Westenhoefer, America’s first openly gay comedian. Her 1994 HBO special – which earned a Cable Ace Award nomination — was the first by a lesbian. She was the first “out” lesbian to perform on Letterman. And boldly going where few straight comics dare, she works predominantly unscripted.
Westenhoefer keeps breaking down barriers and breaking out no-holds-barred storytelling when she wraps up a run at the Tempe Improv.
