We try to be ultra hip here at New Times. While our staff likes to portray our cooly-cool side, we can also appreciate some good old-fashioned sentimentality.
Take Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre’s On Golden Pond. Sure, the too-cool-for-school side of us says this is just a story about a couple of old farts reminiscing about their married life together and being boring. The reality is, we see our own mothers, with all their selflessness and love, in the Ethel Thayer character, while her husband reminds us of gramps, to whom we never had the chance to say “I love you” before he died.
We’re (cough) not crying. We just got something (sniff) stuck in our eye (hiccup).
