This is a collaboration between blues noise guitarist/singer Jon Spencer and Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, another band that knows a thing or two about laying down a primal blues squall. The legendary Jim Dickson produced, but the music has the sloppy, uncontained feel of a spontaneous, booze-fueled jam session. Spencer is his usual over-the-top self, screaming, pleading and snarling his way through 19 tracks that take on every subgenre of the blues. “Primitive” lives up to its name with a bare-bones Bo Diddley rhythm, Spencer’s unruly guitar, and a screeching, indecipherable vocal; “Why!?” brings to mind Iggy and the Stooges with its snarling, snot-nosed vocal and runaway rhythm; “Away Baby” is a country dirge presented with clanging acoustic guitar and insane circus tent organ; and the title track is a Stones knockoff that sounds like the best country rock tune Jagger and Richards never wrote.
