Imagine getting up on a stage, hearing one word, and having to come up with comedic brilliance, on the spot, with no script or coaching allowed. It’s enough to make some people sweat bullets. But it’s all in a day’s work for The Torch Theatre’s recent improv class graduates.
About a dozen students will showcase their new skills for the masses at Space 55. They’ve been preparing to let it all hang out for eight weeks now, learning the basics of long-form improv, readying a monologue-based show, and practicing the oft-dreaded Harold (an intricate format of scenes that tell a narrative).
Professional Valley improvisers, who helped form The Torch more than two years ago, taught the students. If they’re lucky, these newbies might be future performers in the annual Phoenix Improv Festival, sponsored by The Torch and held every spring.
