Look up raunchy songs in the blues dictionary and you’ll find more like “Shake That Thing” and “The Right Key But the Wrong Keyhole.” These rafter-rockin’ numbers are all included in One Mo’ Time, an evening of 1920s black musical vaudeville conceived by historian, performer, and New Orleans native Vernel Bagneris.
Revived on Broadway in 2002, the show’s format of onstage numbers and backstage bickering re-creates an evening, circa 1926, of singin’ and stompin’ in New Orleans’ Lyric Theatre, where jazz legends like Ethel Waters, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson often appeared.
