This week, mud draws the masses to Scottsdale, and it has nothing to do with minimizing pores: The guck at Mighty Mud Mania is all about fun. The City of Scottsdale throws open the mud gates Friday, July 25, at Chaparral Park, 5401 North Hayden. While kids ages 7 to 13 get down and dirty in “the Original Mighty Mud Obstacle Course,” younger children can conquer a mini course, and the tiniest tots can make a splash in mud puddle pools. Firefighters from the Salt River Maricopa Indian Community will help kids construct a mudhouse, and Rural/Metro firefighters will have hoses on hand for cleanup duty. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the mania continues until 2 p.m. Participation is free, but kids are asked to bring nonperishable food or old eyeglasses to benefit the needy. Juniors polish their tennis skills

Tennis lovers 8 to 16 can meet their matches at Tempe’s Kiwanis Park Rec Center, 6111 South All-America Way, where Junior Drop-in Tennis continues through August 29. Learn about Butterflies in Mesa

Butterflies are free (with museum admission, that is) this Saturday, July 26, at Mesa Southwest Museum, 53 North Macdonald. From 1 to 3 p.m., participants in the Weekend Wonders program will study the creatures and craft puppets in their likeness.
