Tussle doesn’t claim to be a dance band. In fact, Tussle doesn’t claim any musical genre as its own. But in spite of its transcendent aspirations, this band is bound to get people moving. These gentlemen from San Francisco combine disco, noise, punk, and dub to create kinetic grooves that make even the wallflowers tap their feet and smile. Heavy bass lines fuel the music, but, as suggested by the title of its 2004 album, Kling-Klang, Tussle’s real secret ingredient is dueling percussionists, who keep the beat moving and provide the backbone to every song. Tussle almost missed out on Phoenix, but luckily Stinkweeds roped in the band for an in-store. Whether people will actually dance is unclear, but one thing is for sure: They should.
