Two men from Harvard.
Their names are Samuel P. Goddard III and J. Fife Symington III.
Both seek to become the next governor of Arizona. How do we choose between them? What can we expect from either of them?
Goddard, the son of ex-Arizona governor Sam Goddard, has never held a real job in his life. He was first a community activist and then mayor of Phoenix.
While he was a community activist, Goddard regularly railed against Burton Barr and the Phoenix 40.
Times have changed for Goddard. Barr is now one of his chief advisers.
As mayor, Goddard brought the city the Iceberg Phoenix Grand Prix and Patriots Square at a cost of millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money.
Symington has been a Republican party activist who was caught breaking campaign-contribution rules by attempting to buy off a city council seat.
Symington wanted the council seat for someone he knew would vote approval of his “world-class” development at 24th Street and Camelback.
As a developer, Symington is responsible for the strange set of buildings that now occupies the southeast corner of 24th Street and Camelback. To date, it has caused some of the worst traffic congestion in Maricopa County.
