Kathy Cano-Murillo, a.k.a. The Crafty Chica, says it takes a lot to get her fired up about politics. But Arizona’s new immigration has this Phoenician particularly hot and bothered. Instead of making a pinata in the likeness of one of our government leaders (also a good idea), Cano-Murillo made herself an ID.

“I frequent Ranch Market, the Mexican craft store and even the carnicerias,” she says. “My `clothes or shoes,’ among other features, might get mistaken for me being here illegally. I thought if I had to be prepared with an ID to show, it might as well be a glittery one to get to the point!”

“I used Photoshop to lighten my ID, erased my personal info and then added the words `SOY AMERICANA’ (I am an American). I attached it to a wood base trimmed in glitter.

“After I posted it [on Facebook] I recieved a lot of positive feedback from people all over the country, from different backgrounds saying they wanted to make an artful ID badge too. Crafts are how I process my frustration.

“I feel like I don’t have to say anything about how I stand on the topic, this badge says it for me!”
