Where we’re going, we don’t need roads; just a synthesizer, eyeliner, and a touch of androgyny. Welcome to Flashback Friday.

It’s been 27 years since the release of the Pet Shop Boys first international hit, “West End Girls,” but vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe continue to make synth-pop tunes as if their lives depended on it.

Although Muse’s latest single, “Survival,” was selected as this year’s official Olympic anthem, PSB’s newest single, “Winner,” released earlier this week, easily could have been an appropriate theme song. Both tunes speak to the trials of athletes, with Muse’s track taking a more epic arena-rock approach, while PSB sticks to an airy ceremonial synth-backed tune.

“You’re a winner, I’m a winner, let’s enjoy it all while it lasts,” Tennant croons. “Winner” is the first single off of the duo’s new album, Elysium, scheduled to drop on September 17.

It may not be as compelling as Muse’s rocker, but PSB is sticking to what they do best: creating lavish melodies, rich arrangements, and dapper ditties.

“Survival’s” lyrics strike a similar tone as “Winner” with Matthew Bellamy singing, “Race, it’s a race, and I’m going to win, yes I’m going to win.” It has that “Eye of the Tiger” gusto every sports song should have.
