John McCain’s newest radio ads are ready to hit the airwaves, and a couple things about them may shock you. First: at no point in either ad does McCain begin a sentence by saying “my friends.” Second: as for now, the ads won’t be barging in on J.D. Hayworth’s radio show — his potential opponent in the GOP primary.
Members of the sales team at 550 (KFVI), home of Hayworth’s Limbaugh-esque radio talk show, tell New Times that, as far as they know, they haven’t sold any air time to the McCain campaign — yet.
The ads, however, seem an attempt by McCain to appeal to the Conservative crowd, where Hayworth has polled higher than McCain in recent months. To quote a New Times colleague, McCain seems to be trying to “out-Hayworth J.D. Hayworth.”
Check out the ads here.
In one, McCain discusses how President Obama is “leading an extreme, left-wing crusade to bankrupt America,” and, shucks, “the maverick” is “America’s last line of defense.”
That sounds like the sort of ultra-Conservative rhetoric that got Hayworth a radio slot right between Sean Hannity and Michael Savage.
We may not be hearing “the maverick’s” ads on KFYI just yet, but our guess is that it’s only a matter of time.
