Sushi is now rolling along a conveyor belt in Goodyear, at the freshly opened Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. The new restaurant, which is the Valley’s fourth location of the international chain, soft-opened on Thursday, March 19. It will celebrate its grand opening this Friday, March 27.

Kura started its journey in Japan in 1977. Over the decades, it has expanded to include more than 550 restaurants in Japan, Taiwan and the United States. The first U.S. restaurant opened in 2008.

At Kura, customers can wait and see which plates of sushi slide past their tables, picking up bites as they go. Specific dishes can also be ordered from the kitchen, which arrive at tables on the secondary Express Belt above the primary sushi belt. These include udon, ramen, side dishes and desserts. There are more than 100 dishes to choose from. If customers order drinks, they are delivered to the table by rolling, smiling robots.

When diners are done with their plates, the fun is far from over. Each table has a prize machine, touch panel and plate disposal slot that automatically counts how many plates are deposited. After five plates, the machine plays a short cartoon. After 15 plates and then 25 plates, the customer gets a prize.

Kura opened its first locations in the Valley in Phoenix and Chandler in 2021, and then added a third in Scottsdale in 2025.

The newest location of Kura joins GSQ, a 150-acre mixed-use development off McDowell Road and 150th Drive. GSQ was created to add a commercial element to Goodyear Civic Square, which includes a new city hall, library, park and office space. GSQ has become a dining hub, attracting many new restaurants and stores, and it continues to grow.

On Friday, Kura’s grand opening celebration will start at 11:30 a.m., and the first 150 seated customers will receive a free t-shirt. Throughout the day, all sushi plates will be priced at $3.75. Going forward, the store will be open daily for lunch and dinner.
