Although Sheriff Joe Arpaio doesn’t resemble the mythological god Hades in the slightest, local artist David Bradley thinks they’re more alike than you know. Both share a penchant for pooches and dastardly trickery, he explains, as well as similar job responsibilities. “Hades presided over souls in torment and I think there’s certainly a correlation with what Sheriff Joe does in his jails,” Bradley says.
It’s why he cast Arpaio as the king of the underworld for one of the six ceramic sculptures featured in his “Vox Populi” show currently on display at eye lounge, 419 East Roosevelt Street. A half-dozen celebrities and politicians are rendered as figures from Greek mythology for the exhibition, ranging from the hawkish Senator John McCain as war-mongering Ares or the gun-toting Sarah Palin as Artemis, goddess of the hunt. “It’s just pointing out how our culture, no matter what the time period may be, tends to elevate people to a higher realm of reality,” he says. “I make the connection that they’re held to the kind of esteem that was only reserved for the ancient mythological gods.”
The exhibition will be on display through October 15.
