Smoke and Stack are back.
Ryan Coogler’s vampire opus, “Sinners,” is returning to the Valley as the director intended audiences to see it. The film will be shown at Harkins Theatres Arizona Mills 18 in 70MM IMAX beginning Thursday, Oct. 30.
As Phoenix New Times reported earlier this year, “70 mm IMAX is a high-resolution, high-quality film format that provides an enhanced viewing experience. On a regular screen, a 70 mm IMAX film looks good. On an IMAX screen, it looks freaking spectacular.”
When “Sinners” was released in the spring, Harkins Arizona Mills was one of only eight theaters in the country showing the film in its ideal format.
For the uninitiated, “Sinners” stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who return to their hometown in Mississippi to open up a juke joint only to find racial tension and romantic troubles. The club’s opening night is interrupted by a group of vampires, who murder some patrons and turn others.
The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Osaku and Delroy Lindo.
“Sinners” earned rave reviews upon its release; Newsweek called it one of the best films of the year and David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “As much arthouse as grindhouse, it’s a blood-drenched mix tape that shouldn’t work. But it does, thanks to Coogler’s muscular direction, a terrific cast, enveloping IMAX visuals, body-quaking sound and music that stirs the soul.” Its current Rotten Tomatoes score is 98% Fresh.
“Sinners” will run at Harkins Arizona Mills through Thursday, Nov. 6. Tickets are $18.75 plus taxes and fees. The theater is located at 5000 S. Arizona Mills Circle, Tempe.
