Every year, thousands of festivalgoers flock to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. And in the back of many an Instagram photo, the event's iconic observation wheel towers over the action.
More than just a picturesque backdrop for Instagram-worthy moments, this massive structure is a feat of engineering and logistics, earning the title of the largest transportable observation wheel in the world.
And it hails from right here in the Valley.
The observation wheel is owned and operated by Ray Cammack Shows, a Phoenix-based carnival entertainment company that owns the midways of fair events throughout the country, including the Arizona State Fair. Since 1963, the Ahwatukee-based family have entertained generations of crowds.
Standing at an impressive 150 feet, the observation wheel dominates the Coachella skyline, offering sweeping panoramic views of the festival and the beautiful surrounding desert landscape.
Ben Pickett the vice president of Ray Cammack Shows, describes it as "far more than a regular ride or attraction at a fair."
But what many don't realize is the immense effort it takes to bring this ride to life.
Assembling the wheel is no small job; it requires a 60-ton crane and a dedicated crew working for 10 days to piece it together. Once operational, it demands more electrical power than any other ride at most fairs, underscoring the scale of this mechanical wonder.
Pickett explains, "We prioritize state-of-the-art safety protocols, and even if the ride lost power for some reason, we have a generator and procedures for everyone to unload the wheel safely."
Beyond its technical side, the Ferris wheel has become a symbol of the festival experience.
Pickett says, "Whether it's capturing a sunset ride or taking in the electrifying atmosphere from above, stepping into one of its gondolas is a must for first-time attendees and seasoned festival veterans alike."
The Coachella Ferris wheel is more than just a ride. It's an essential part of the festival's magic, blending spectacle, innovation and unforgettable views into a single, inspiring experience.
