It's safe to say that "Sinners" is currently the hottest movie ticket in town.
"Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler's Depression-era vampire opus (which he directed, wrote and co-produced) is a smash hit with critics and moviegoers; it's currently sitting at a 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and its CinemaScore, a statistic that tracks how much audiences like a film, is sitting at a solid A grade, the first horror movie to score that high.
"Sinners," which stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers who return to their hometown in Mississippi to open a music venue but end up encountering a pack of the bloodthirsty undead, was shot in 70 mm IMAX, a high-resolution, high-quality film format that provides an enhanced viewing experience.
On a regular screen, a 70 mm IMAX film looks good. On an IMAX screen, it looks freaking spectacular. But only eight theaters around the country are showing "Sinners" in its intended format this weekend, and one is right here in the Valley.
Harkins Theatres Arizona Mills 18 in Tempe has IMAX screenings of "Sinners" currently scheduled through Thursday, May 1. The cost is higher than a regular screening; tickets are $17.75 plus taxes and fees, bringing the total to $19.60. There is no discount for matinee screenings, seniors or children. (Don't bring your kids to this movie, seriously.)
The Arizona Mills location offers both IMAX screenings and regular screenings of "Sinners," so if you want to see the enhanced version, make sure you purchase the correct tickets.
"Sinners" passed $70 million at the box office as of Wednesday, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and is expected to have another big weekend in the coming days.
In his review for ABC News, renowned film critic Peter Travers wrote, "Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler team for their best and most daring work yet, a game-changing vampire-gangster-western-musical that’s divisive, dangerous and primed to explode. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen and the best movie of this young year."
