Jane Doe: A Phoenix Woman’s Battle with Breast Cancer Becomes an International Documentary Success

Cancer could have killed Jane Fendelman. Instead, it brought her back to life. And her video documentation of her painful treatment and miraculous recovery (which she edited and released as a documentary titled Jane Doe) has brought her accolades — most recently, a nomination at the International Women’s Film and Television Showcase, taking place next month in Hollywood. Jane Doe is one of only ten films worldwide to be nominated for an award at the showcase.

Alice Cooper Scouts Teen Talent for His Christmas Pudding Show

For the past eight years, Alice Cooper has given us yuletide rockings with his annual Christmas Pudding show. Phoenix’s resident shock rocker hosts the annual fete to raise money for his charity, the Solid Rock Foundation, a non-profit Christian corporation that provides a recreation center (The Rock Teen Center) for teenagers. To that end, Cooper’s “Proof is in the Pudding” talent competition — which nets the winning contestant a gig at the Christmas Pudding show — now includes a Teen Competition.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 4) is election day, and as a “thank you” to voters for casting their ballots, Starbucks is offering a free small coffee to anyone who comes in and says they voted.

From Dark to Dank

Nestling somewhere between metalcore and screamo/post-hardcore, From Dark sounds a lot like a bunch of other bands you’ve probably heard: The Used, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Underoath, Thrice, and Senses Fail, to name a few. The formula? Spiraling, melodic guitars; dissonant lyrics; steady drum rhythms; and vocals that alternate between singing…

Apocalyptica Now

If heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica is any indication, whatever’s in the water in Finland makes for a pretty heavy tonic. The band takes classical music instruments and sets them to epic renditions of metal songs, or melds them into their own booming, bottom-heavy compositions. While the group (consisting of…

The Horror

Danish psychobilly band HorrorPops was born from Nekromantix, the psychobilly band HorrorPops co-founder Kim Nekromantix was in when he met future HorrorPops singer Patricia Day. The sultry, raven-haired Day and Nekromantix eventually married, making HorrorPops a family affair. The band’s latest album, Kiss Kiss Kill Kill, showcases the HorrorPop’s dark,…

Think We’ll Go Eat Worms: The Dune Costume Party at Green Restaurant, Saturday, Oct. 25

David Lynch’s films have always garnered cult followings, but in the case of his 1984 screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, there’s more magic than murder in the air. There are psychic “witches,” futuristic water suits, giant sand worms, a coveted, mysterious spice, and Sting in a mankini. Fans of the sci-fi flick showed their spirit by dressing up as their favorite characters from the film at “The Spice Will Flow” Dune costume party at Green Restaurant in Tempe on Saturday, October 25.

Bottoms Up: The Jimi Hendrix Liquid Experience Inspires InSIPid Humor

Jimi Hendrix died 38 years ago, but his music lives on — and his merchandising does, too. Caffeine fiends can now drink a real “rock star” energy drink — the “Jimi Hendrix Liquid Experience.” The flavorful brew was introduced last year by The Liquid Experience Group, a division of Beverage Concepts, LLC, and seems to be catching on in consumer land. The drink is available in seven states — New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, California, and Arizona, and the company looks to expand its distribution over the next two years.

Red Hot Blues

The first CD from local bluesician Paris James harks back to the back-porch country blues of the 1920s, when players like Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson were finger-picking through a mix of folk, gospel hymns, and Delta blues. The sounds of spirituals and the South that dominate James’ CD…

Better than: The first two presidential debates.

Henry Rollins is a man of many words. The former singer of Black Flag and Rollins Band is currently out on his umpteenth spoken word tour (labeled “The Recountdown Tour”) and this time around, he’s got plenty to say about politics, his travels, and the more ridiculous aspects of American popular culture.

Music Video Pokes Sheriff Joe

Sheriff Joe may not have much of a sense of humor (witness his gauche “They call it the U.K.K.K.” joke at the beginning of the video below), but somebody else has managed to turn Arpaio’s nasty tacks into a little song-and-dance number.

O Henry

Henry Rollins says he is down on bended knee, begging you — to vote. It may be hard to imagine Rollins — muscle-bound, sweaty, tattooed — begging, with his furrowed-brow intensity, for anything. But he’s known for being a man of a thousand media, showing he’ll get his point across…
