“I always watched politics like sports,” says Barrio Cafe chef-owner Silvana Salcido Esparza. “But SB 1070 was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Nowadays, the acclaimed culinary talent — who was a semifinalist for a James Beard Award this year — is getting more politically involved, speaking out against our state’s controversial law and now cooking her scrumptious Mexican cuisine for a Democratic Party fundraiser barbecue set for Sunday, October 10.

“I’m tired of the complacency. Like, during the primaries, nobody showed up. It’s a wakeup call,” she says.

Esparza doesn’t imagine herself ever leaving the kitchen for politics, but that doesn’t mean she can’t make a difference. Remember that old saying about how the best way to someone’s heart is through their stomach?
