A few days ago, we got word that J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician is hosting The Glenlivet Dinner on Thursday, January 21. The food sounds scrumptious: butternut squash soup, sweet and sour pork belly, New York steak and chocolate cake with caramel ice cream, each course paired with a different single-malt scotch.

We imagine food lovers across the Valley would be delighted to sample that menu, especially at a restaurant founded by celebrated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The unusual part is the reception, which begins at 6 p.m. out on J&G’s west patio and includes hors d’oeuvres, complimentary tastings of The Glenlivet’s 12-year-old-scotch and cigars courtesy of the Scottsdale Cigar Club.

Scotch. Smokes. How incredibly manly. It sounds like something out of a ’20s era gentleman’s club, before such things became unfashionable due to their perceived exclusionary and un-PC nature. Since women are clearly allowed — and some may even elect to participate in the scotch swilling and cigar smoking — this is more like Gentleman’s Club Lite, but still…

While we know a few broads who would take scotch over Chardonnay any day, it’s hard to imagine sophisticated modern women sipping Glenlivet with a stogie hanging out of their mouths. Then again, women can always enjoy the scotch and the dinner and steer clear of the smoky patio.
