If the kitchen at Tarbell’s, the award-winning neighborhood restaurant in Central Phoenix, is absent one culinary whiz a few days in October, it’s because its owner and chef, Mark Tarbell, is in Portland, Maine.

The winner of season five of Iron Chef America, Tarbell will be one of a panel of experts judging the first “Top of the Crop” competition at Harvest on the Harbor, Maine’s premier food and wine experience being held on October 21.

Along with John Golden, former New York food editor and writer for Cuisine Magazine, Lisa Turner, owner of Laughing Stock Farm and cookbook author, and Meredith Goad, food writer for the Portland Press Herald, Tarbell will determine Maine’s best farm to table chef from four participants as they prepare their premier dishes using only fresh ingredients from local farms plus one preselected item.

Sounds a little like Iron Chef, right? No wonder Tarbell’s been tapped for this.
