On Thursday, international coffee giant Starbucks announced that it would close 1% of its North American stores. By Sunday, cafes around the country had shut down.

The company published a letter from Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol.

“Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations. This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult,” the letter said.

The letter also explained that the company’s goal is for “every coffeehouse to deliver a warm and welcoming space with a great atmosphere and a seat for every occasion.”

This means that many of the Starbucks closures impacted pick-up-only locations. The company’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy also includes renovating around 1,000 stores with added power outlets and comfortable seating. As Starbucks competes with drive-thru-only coffee chains, the company is making an effort to return to a more casual coffeehouse vibe, where customers can sit and stay awhile.

The Starbucks closures are part of a $1 billion plan, which also included cutting 900 non-retail employees and closing open positions, the letter said.
