Hanny’s
No downtown bar combines more eclectic, curious influences under one soaring roof. Through most of the 20th century, this was a men’s department store, and the bar has won recognition for keeping many of the original architectural flourishes. Also, it has added some genuinely weird shit. Dip downstairs to check out a clearly haunted basement space that displays a gaggle of spooky dolls gathered around a table slathered in pennies. Or, hell, ignore all that and just enjoy the standout cocktail menu, the pizzas and the view from the tables in the mezzanine. The scene here peaks after a big game or downtown concert. Dudes in Booker jerseys will be laughing two tables away from a couple dressed up for a big night on the town. The mashup never fails: We once saw a wedding proposal at a giddy table while the DJ happened to be spinning that classic romantic chestnut “Gangsta’s Paradise.” If Coolio were still alive, he’d be at Hanny’s on a Friday night. But since he’s not, check the basement.
