Corey Busboom's Circuit-Bent Instrument Shows Up in Devo's Latest Music Video

The tough-looking circuit-bent instruments crafted by Phoenix's Corey Busboom are able to survive getting accidentally dropped by clumsy musicians. However, these curious creations (which are made from broken electronics and household appliances) won't survive an attack by ginormous kaiju monsters.

This fact is demonstrated in the latest music video by Devo, as the legendary '80s New Wave act's frontman Mark Mothersbaugh wields a lo-fi DIY synthesizer built from a vintage adding machine by Busboom in the recently released music video for the song "Monster Man."

As I've reported back in 2010, Mothersbaugh is a major fan of Busboom's work, to say the least. He's not only purchased close to a dozen circuit-bent instruments made by the local artist, but is so enamored with them that he's made a habit of featuring them in Devo-related appearances on TV shows, the Internet, and at various live gigs.

For instance, Busboom's modified tennis racket and joystick synth appeared in the above promo video that Mothersbaugh shot for his alma mater Kent State University. And the aforementioned adding machine was featured prominently during one of Devo's many appearances on Yo Gabba Gabba!

In the video for "Monster Men," which feature the theme song from the Syfy reality show of the same name, Devo performs on the roof of a tall skyscraper while a Godzilla-like monster and a doppelganger for Ultraman engage in mortal combat. Mothersbaugh, who - like the other members of the band -- is clothed in a camouflage jumpsuit and is adorned in silver facepaint and a mask, clutches onto Busboom's creations, a combination oscillator and synthesizer constructed from a vintage Casio desktop calculator.

Well, at least until the aforementioned pseudo-Godzilla trips backwards and obliterates both the band and the building they're performing on.

If you're worried about the condition of the circuit-bent instrument, fear not. It will likely show up during Devo's next appearance or music video.
