With daily highs reaching 114 degrees and basically staying there, it’s been a hot start to August. In fact, the first five days have been the fourth-hottest start to August in Phoenix history, according to the National Weather Service.

“These temperatures are absolutely warmer than normal,” NWS meteorologist Ted Whittock said.

Currently, it’s around 10 degrees hotter outside in Phoenix than the average start to August. Normally, Phoenix will see early August temperatures of around 105 degrees. So far, it’s been well above that.

As of Tuesday, the average temperature this month has been 100.8 degrees, with the average high at a whopping 113 degrees. Temperatures are expected to stay this high going into the weekend, when they’re expected to drop while still remaining above normal, Whittock said.

While the summer of 2025 has been more run-of-the-mill compared to the previous two, August could be the month that kicks it into high gear. Whittock said this August could “absolutely” be a record-breaking month for Phoenix heat, and the NWS Climate Prediction Center says there is a 40% chance that the temperature will be “above normal” throughout the rest of the month. With very low chances of rain or a monsoon, nothing is likely to bring a dramatic temperature decrease.

But this August has some hot competition if it wants to break any records. The last two years provided the second and third-hottest Augusts on record. The only hotter month was August 2020, with an average temperature of 99.1 degrees. There was a lot of sweating under those masks, if you were foolhardy enough to go outside.

Here’s what August 2025 has to shoot for.

Hottest Augusts in Phoenix history

If this month's temperatures stay on track, it could become the hottest August on record. If that surprises you, it’s possible you’ve been experiencing “recency bias,” Whittock said. Due to the last two years being so hot, it’s easy to compare this year to “the last few recent years in memory” to downplay temperatures.

It’s still “usually hot” this year, Whittock said, adding that “this is dangerous heat for almost the entire population if proper precautions are not taken.”

Here are the hottest Augusts in Phoenix history.
