In case you hadn't heard, SB 1070 will be protested on Saturday, May 29 with a massive march to the Arizona state Capitol from Phoenix's Steele Indian School Park.
Things kick off with a rally, speeches and performances beginning at 8 a.m., then the march will begin from 3rd Street and Indian School Road, zig-zag south till it hits Washington Street, and head West till it ends at the Capitol around 1:30 p.m. for another rally.
Speakers will include Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez, civil rights icon and UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, and others. Alex Lora of the Mexican rock band El Tri, and Mexican-American singer-songwriter Jenni Rivera are also slated to be there.
The day before, AltoArizona will be sponsoring a "Festival for Human Rights" at Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox's El Portal Restaurant at 2nd Avenue and Grant.
A concert featuring Alex Lora and several other acts, as well as an art show, mural painting and other activities are planned for the party. The get-down gets down from 6 p.m. to midnight. A $5 donation gets you in.Once again, AltoArizona.com has all the info on that.
Last but not least, there will be an "Artists Rally Against 1070" on May 29, the evening of the march, at the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center at 147 E. Adams in downtown Phoenix.
The press release for the event announces that,
"As a symbol of its opposition to SB 1070, ALAC is issuing an open call to artists to appear at the organization's arts and cultural center downtown on May 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. to present artwork or performances inspired by their opposition to SB 1070.
"Artists who are interested in presenting their work at the ALAC arts and cultural center on May 29 are asked to contact Mario Mendia or José Andrés Girón at [email protected].
Nice to see the local arts community involved. Might be nice if ALAC were to do a show that would stay up for a while as well. I know ALAC's a non-profit, but still, controversy is always good for business, even if the business is not-for-profit.
